Logistics Visibility Series | Part 10 Financial Visibility for Transportation & Logistics Leaders - Building a Finance Function That Supports Growth

Growth is exciting.  More customers. More revenue. More shipments. More opportunities.

But growth also creates complexity.  As a transportation or logistics company grows, the finance function needs to grow with it.  That doesn't necessarily mean adding more people.  It means making sure the processes, controls, reporting, and financial visibility supporting the business are keeping pace.

Growth Changes the Financial Demands of the Business

Additional volume can place pressure on financial processes that worked perfectly well when the company was smaller.  More customers mean more invoices and receivables.  More shipments can mean more accruals and carrier payables.  Additional locations or entities can make reconciliations and reporting more complicated.  And perhaps most importantly, more revenue can create greater demands on working capital.  A company can be growing and profitable while still experiencing pressure on cash.  That's why Finance needs to scale alongside the operation.

What Should a Growing Finance Function Provide?

A finance function built to support growth should give leadership more than accurate financial statements.

It should provide:

  • A disciplined and timely month-end close

  • Strong balance-sheet reconciliations and controls

  • Visibility into profitability and margin trends

  • Active management of receivables and working capital

  • Reliable cash-flow forecasting

  • Reporting that connects financial results with operational performance

These don't necessarily require a larger finance department.  Sometimes the opportunity is to strengthen the processes, reporting, tools, and leadership supporting the finance team already in place.  The objective should be to help Finance spend less time simply producing numbers and more time helping leadership understand what those numbers mean.

Finance Should Help Leadership Look Ahead

As the business grows, leadership should be asking:

Where are margins changing?  Where is cash being consumed?  Are our processes and controls keeping pace with volume?  Are we collecting receivables quickly enough to support growth?  What financial risks are beginning to emerge?  And what needs to change before the next stage of growth?

Those questions move Finance beyond historical reporting and toward its broader role as a business partner.  The goal isn't to build a bigger Finance department simply because the company is getting bigger.

The goal is to build a finance function capable of supporting the business the company is becoming.

Questions to Consider

  • Is your finance function keeping pace with the growth of your operation?

  • Does leadership have the financial visibility it needs to make timely decisions?

  • Are your processes and controls designed for today's business—or the company you were several years ago?

  • Could your existing finance team create more value with stronger processes, reporting, and senior-level support?

Growth should create opportunity.

Finance helps make sure that growth is profitable, sustainable, and financially manageable.
