Logistics Visibility Series | Part 8 - Five Questions Every Transportation Leadership Team Should Ask Every Month

Financial reporting becomes more valuable when it leads to better questions.

A monthly P&L can tell leadership whether revenue increased, margins declined, or expenses exceeded budget.

But the numbers alone don't always tell you what needs attention.

Throughout my career in transportation and logistics finance, I found that some of the most productive discussions started by asking why

Here are five questions I believe transportation leadership teams should regularly ask:

1. Where are we really making money?

Company-wide profitability only tells part of the story. Which customers, regions, services, or parts of the business are generating the strongest returns?

2. Why did our margins change?

Don't stop at the variance. Understanding the operational drivers behind it—customer mix, volume, pricing, operating costs, or lane performance—is what makes the information useful.

3. Are we converting profit into cash?

A profitable month doesn't necessarily mean cash flow is strong. Receivables, payment timing, and working capital can tell a very different story.

4. What is changing that we need to address now?

Look for trends before they become problems. Rising receivables, declining margins, unexpected costs, or changes in customer activity deserve attention early.

5. What should we do differently next month?

This may be the most important question.

Financial reporting shouldn't simply document what happened.

It should help leadership decide what happens next.

That's the difference between reporting numbers and creating financial visibility

The goal isn't more reports.

It's better questions, better conversations, and ultimately, better business decisions.

Questions to Consider

Does your monthly financial review focus primarily on results—or on what caused them?

Are finance and operations discussing the same performance drivers?

And most importantly:

Does every financial review end with a clear understanding of what happens next?
